Mrs Julia Shirley, DL, called on Mrs Jane McCullagh, from Larne, and presented her with a card as she celebrates her 105th birthday this week.
During her lifetime there have been 18 US Presidents and, when asked what her earliest memory was, she clearly remembers her father returning from WW1 in 1918. An amazing lady and many happy returns from the Lord-Lieutenant and all the Antrim Lieutenancy. Mr David McCorkell took up office as Lord-Lieutenant for County Antrim on the 29 June 2019. Lord-Lieutenants are appointed by the Crown by Letters Patent under the Great Seal. David’s Letters Patent were dated the 16 July 2019 and were enrolled in the Central Office of the Court of Judicature of Northern Ireland on 20 November 2019, as can be seen in the London Gazette Appointment Notice.
![]() The Antrim Lieutenancy had another busy Remembrance period. The Lieutenancy was represented at events all over County Antrim. The Lord-Lieutenant of County Antrim, Mr David McCorkell, had the great honour of laying wreaths, on behalf of Her Majesty The Queen, for the first time, in Ballymena in the morning and in Antrim in the afternoon. He was accompanied by his Lord-Lieutenant Cadet, Cadet Sergeant Catherine Hill, Air Training Corps, and the High Sheriff of County Antrim, Mr Ronnie Hassard. The new Vice Lord-Lieutenant, Mrs Miranda Gordon, DL, had the honour of laying a wreath on behalf of the Lord-Lieutenant of County Antrim in Carrickfergus. Deputy Lieutenants (DLs) attended a further eleven events and also had the honour of laying wreaths on behalf of the Lord-Lieutenant in the following locations: Ballycastle - Colonel Neil Salisbury, OBE, DL Ballyclare - Danny Kinahan, DL Ballymoney - Major John Pinkerton, TD, DL Bushmills - Dr Peter Fitzgerald, CBE, DL Carnmoney & Glengormley - Mrs Julia Shirley, DL Larne - Mr Liam Kelly, JP, DL Lisburn - Mr Eric Rainey, CVO, MBE, DL Portrush - Dr Stephen Bailie, TD, DL Whiteabbey - Dr Norman Walker, OBE, TD, JP, DL Whitehead - Colonel Stewart Douglas, OBE, DL Rathlin Island - Colonel Neil Salisbury, OBE, DL (Sunday 17th November 2019) The Lieutenancy extends their warmest thanks to all of the local branches of the Royal British Legion that were involved. Antrim & Newtonabbey Borough Council hosted a special reception to launch the Council’s VE Day 75 commemorations, a special Veterans’ Recognition reception was held at the Museum, at The Mill at Mossley Mill, on Thursday 7 November. Watched on by their families, elected members, Military and Royal British Legion representatives, seven World War Two Veterans from the Borough, were each presented with a specially commissioned Poppy of Remembrance as a token of the Council’s thanks for their contribution in achieving Victory in Europe and restoring peace across many countries. HRH The Earl of Wessex had two engagements in County Antrim on Thursday 10th October and he was received by Her Majesty's Lord-Lieutenant of County Antrim, Mr David McCorkell.
As Royal Colonel, he visited 2nd Battalion The Rifles at Thiepval Barracks, Lisburn and afterwards, as a Trustee The Duke of Edinburgh's Award, the Belfast Activity Centre, the Stable Yard, Barnett Demense. The hard work, dedication and passion of a group of local volunteers for keeping their town blooming and beautiful all-year-round has been rewarded with the highest form of civic recognition.

![]() Royal Portrush Golf Club, Portrush, County Antrim hosted the 148th Open Championship in July 2019. It was the first time The Open had returned to County Antrim and Northern Ireland since 1951. HRH the Duke of York attended the Championship as past Captain of the R&A and was greeted by Her Majesty's Lord-Lieutenant of County Antrim, Mr David McCorkell, which was his first Royal Visit since taking over as Lord-Lieutenant from Mrs Joan Christie, CVO, OBE. The title of the Champion Golfer of the Year for 2019 was appropriately won by Irishman Shane Lowry. |
